Cool Like That

On Saturday October 12, grammy award winning Digable Planets', brought their tour to T.O and performed a dope show at the MOD club. Digable Planets sound is a fusion of jazz and hip hop. The group is composed of Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler originally from Seattle, Craig "Doodoobug" who is now known as Cee Knowledge Irving from Philly. Finally, the only female member who has a similar voice to Lisa Left Eye Lopez, Mary Ann "Ladybug Mecca" Vieira is from Washington D.C. The group also had another member called, Silkworm who later left to embark a solo career. In 1993, D.P's debut album, 'Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space). received raving reviews. The album's lead single, "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat) was performed and was a smash cross over hit. The group went through a lot. Their second album wasn't that big of a success. Therefore, the group group broke up due to creative differences and emotional status of certain group members.
Nevertheless, in 2005, the group knew they had something special and the planets were aligned together with a retrospective album Beyond the Spectrum: The Creamy Spy Chronicles.
The Planets played at their home base in BB King's in Times Square and announced that a new album would be released in 2008. Even though each Digable Planets' member still focus on their own side projects and solo careers and other groups, they managed to have a successful tour as Digable Planets.

Is it STILL Dark inside?

Amazingly, the Dark Knight is Still playing in theatres! The Batman or should I say Joker movie has ranked as the highest grossing film right next to Titanic. Even better...there is much speculated talk about Batman 3. Which might have Johnny Depp as a villain and Cher as Catwoman? Nevertheless, as of right now these are all just rumours but don't rule a Batman 3 out! In other Joker news.....the apartment where Heath Ledger's body was found is being sold at double the price it was bought. In addition, Hollywood actors Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law have donated their earning from the new movie to the daughter of the late Heath Ledger.The actors have decided to donate their earnings from the new movie'The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus' to 2-year old Matilda because Heath had written an old will before he died in January 2008. The three actors, replaced Ledger in the film and will all play the character of Tony who is being transported into three separate dimensions. A friend in need is a friend indeed!

Romeo, O Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?

The answer to that question is in T.O of course. I bumped into my fellow Scarboroughnian, Canadian actor Mark Taylor who was on his way to rehearsals for his new show, which will be aired on CBC called, SWAT. Mark, is best known for his character Romeo on the Canadian teen highschool show Student Bodies. Marks career started early by doing voice overs in shows like in 1988 when he did voice overs for A Pup Named Scooby-Doo and in 1995 for the Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat Than. He has also been on numerous other t.v shows such as, Instant Star, Drop the Beat and Flashpoint of this year. Marky Mark has been credited to have done a few television movies such as, Color of Justice, Seventeen Again and Doomstown.

An interesting fact I did not know about Mr. Taylor was that he studied Computer Engineering Technology at Seneca College and graduated from Albert Campbell Collegiate Institute. Smart and Hot! mmmmmm Be sure to stay tuned to Mark's new show SWAT on CBC.

GUINNESS KING

How does an average guy get famous? Ask my new Tamil Sri Lankan brother, Suresh Joachim, who should be known as the Guinness KING. Suresh who now lives in Mississauga Ontario, dropped by Canada from his whirl wind journey and I had a chance to chat with him. Since 1996, Suresh broke over 30 World Records around the world in many categories AND none of them are NOT broken by ANYONE! WOW! His first record was 1000 consecutive hours of running. Holy Smokes! I can barely run for 15 minutes without losing my breath! Suresh has been traveling around the world performing much different type of world records. He told me that he was even a guest on Regis and Kelly. He drummed continuously for 84 hours in Switzerland; ran on a treadmill for 168 hours to cover 659.27km in France; bowled for 100hrs in our very own country, Canada. He also carried a 4.5 kg brick in a nominated ungloved hand in an un cradled downward position for 126.675km in Australia. Suresh told me that his main goal is to hold records in many different categories and also holds the record for most recent records, which he will soon accomplish. His ultimate goal is to break 150 world records in 8 years!

The most remarkable demonstration of Suresh’s commitment was when he made a huge impact by completing the World Peace Marathonin, in which he helped raise a whole lot of money for the suffering children with the UFFORSC. The Universal Fund for Suffering Children is a charity, of which Suresh is the Secretary General. The object of Ufforsc is to help the needy children around the world by providing with basic needs such as food, shelter, education and medicine. He began his journey on December 25, 2007 in Jerusalem and finished on June 24, 2008 in Sydney Australia. During his voyage, Suresh travelled through 88 major cities, in 54 countries passing a symbolic peace torch to dignitaries in each place. The journey will end with the peace torch being handed over to the leader of the country followed by a huge musical celebration. Suresh traveled over 6,000 KM, taking him a total of 182 days.

Suresh Joachim, is not just any man. He is a real life super hero who uses his drive, gifts and talents to make a positive change to the world! That is why Mr. Suresh Joachim is our Crazy Mofo of the Year!

MANIFESTO 2009 Power to the People!

Manifesto did it again! The 2009 festival ended at Nathan Phillips Square with a day packed with B Boy dancin', professional and do it yourself grafitti, dancing lessons, sweet merchandise for sale and most of all dope performances. Stolen from Africa was spittin' some serious thoughtful rhymes about our nation. Rochester Juice was off the chain who had some fly girls to help him dance. Promise was incredibly talented and is an artist to watch out for. Montreal native Famous tore it up minus Trinity Kris for the hit BIG MON TINGS. Zaki Ibraham helped out in back up vocals for her girl, Trini native, Ms. Tanika Charles who showed us a few warm up exercises before going onstage. T.O's hottest music producer 2 Rude himself, had to show his talent on stage with his 2 prodigies, female rapper Quinn Maeback and sexy singer Kaleb Simmons. Van City Rascalz spread their vibe all over T.O with their special guest performers K-OS and Choclair who came down with the Northern Touch. The livest performer of the night was lyrical genius K'NAAN who hit up the stage with a bangin' performance. K'NAAN reflects deep stories of the stuggles of the Somalian community and his life experiences into his philosopical music. Clearly drunk Kevin, K-OS was the last to come on stage but had to have his act cut short because Manifesto went over time. I also bumped into rapper Richie Sosa who was samplin' his mix c.d.Count Money Vol. 1 - The First Million. I suprisingly bumped into KING of New York City, legendary music producer, turntable technician DJ Premier, who started the careers of rappers like Jay Z and Nas. He was off to rehearsal for the big after party at Circa. He was going head to head with another big time Music Mon, Pete Rock. Well, I guess the hard work at rehearsals paid off because I heard that Premier killed it. I also had a chance to hit up the Manifesto hotel party and chatted with a suprisingly quiet or tired K'NAAN. He had a banana in his pocket so we broke the ice by asking him if he had a banana in his pocket or if he was just happy to see us. LOL. We also chatted for a bit with Red 1 from the Rascalz AND I seemed to have lost your digits because of my ghetto phone so if you read this............HOLLA! Special thanks goes out Manifesto's hardworking team, Cat Fawcett and Che Kothari. Can't wait for next year!
